Approximately 1855-1859

In this section Martin wrote in detail about the births of his children Annie and John Martin Jr., his house and gardens on Center Street -- with illustrations, and business dealings and failures, including Pendleton & Ross, Shaw & Merrill furniture manufacturers, Furber & Metcalf, I.W. Patten; and local politics, including his failed bid to become city clerk.

Martin noted that "the evil one" followed him as he constantly felt cheated by employers for whom he had worked diligently, either when their businesses failed or when they engaged other accountants.
